I drank too much this summer. As I always do.
I wasn't waking up in a ditch or drinking a bottle of whiskey every night. It was much more subtle than that.
A couple of drinks on the weekend. Drinks at dinner. A few too many on vacation. Thursday night because the weather was nice. Saturday because it was Saturday. Plus 100 or post game beers after an endless summer of club basketball, baseball, and soccer.
There was always a reason. And that's the problem with alcohol. It's way too easy to drink everyday and not think twice about it. That is, until you start noticing the negative health effects of it.
It doesn't have to destroy your life to start quietly working against the life you're trying to build.
If you're a man who lifts weights, cares about testosterone, wants to stay lean, values good sleep, and plans on staying strong and healthy as you age, eventually you have to ask yourself:
What exactly is alcohol doing for me?
After this summer, I started asking myself that question. I didn't particularly like the answer.
Research suggests that even moderate consumption of alcohol negatively affect sleep, testosterone, body composition, muscle recovery, and cardiovascular health.
Here are five reasons I'm cutting way back on alcohol — and why you might want to consider doing the same.
1. Quitting Alcohol Improves Your Sleep
This might be the biggest one for me. Have a few drinks at night makes me feel like I have been hit with a tranquilizer dart. But falling asleep faster isn't the same thing as sleeping better. In fact, most of the time I feel like I didn't sleep at all.
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 27 studies found that alcohol altered normal sleep patterns, including delaying REM sleep and reducing REM sleep duration. Remarkably, disruptions in REM sleep were detected following relatively low doses of alcohol — approximately two standard drinks — and worsened as the dose increased.
That's a problem if you care about recovery and performance. Sleep is when your body and brain perform some of their most important recovery processes, including releasing growth hormone and testosterone.
I might technically spend eight hours in bed after drinking, but the next morning doesn't feel like I slept eight hours.
I'm foggier.
I'm more tired.
Training feels harder.
And I need more caffeine just to get moving.
Think about how ridiculous that is. We spend money on supplements, eat protein, optimize our workouts and obsess over recovery — then willingly consume something that can interfere with one of our most important recovery tools.
If you want better sleep, reducing or eliminating alcohol is one of the most obvious variables to test.
2. Alcohol Can Work Against Healthy Testosterone Levels
If you're a man concerned about maintaining healthy testosterone as you age, pay attention to this one. I recently had my blood work done and despite all the extra sunlight, my testosterone actually dropped 100+ points. I am almost 100% positive that alcohol was to blame.
Alcohol and testosterone have a complicated relationship. A drink doesn't instantly destroy your testosterone. In fact, some research has shown that a low acute dose of alcohol can temporarily increase measured testosterone.
But chronic alcohol consumption tells a different story.
A large meta-analysis examining 21 studies and more than 10,000 subjects found that chronic alcohol consumption in otherwise healthy men was associated with reductions in total testosterone and free testosterone, along with an increase in estradiol.
A 2023 review similarly concluded that while low-to-moderate acute alcohol intake may temporarily increase testosterone, large amounts of alcohol are associated with decreased testosterone levels in men.
For guys interested in supporting testosterone naturally, that's worth thinking about.
Why spend hundreds of dollars on supplements?
Why lift heavy?
Why eat protein?
Why take zinc and magnesium?
Why optimize vitamin D?
Why would we do all these things, then on Friday destroy all that work by crushing eight beers.
You can't supplement your way around bad habits.
If supporting healthy testosterone is actually a priority, alcohol intake deserves to be part of the conversation. Now that I have seen it on my blood work, I am going to do more to change my habits as we move into the fall.
3. Alcohol Can Make Weight Loss and Staying Lean Harder
This is the one you eventually see in the mirror. Personally, I have put on close to 8 lbs since the beginning of May. That's a huge amount of body fat.
Alcohol provides roughly 7 calories per gram, making it considerably more calorie-dense than either protein or carbohydrates.
But the calories from alcohol aren't the only problem. It's everything that tends to happen around them.
Nobody finishes three beers and suddenly thinks:
"You know what sounds great right now? Chicken breast and steamed broccoli."
For me it's usually pizza, wings, ice cream, or 5 bowls of my kids cereal.
A systematic review examining alcohol consumption and body weight found that the relationship isn't completely straightforward, but heavier drinking is more consistently associated with weight gain than light-to-moderate consumption.
That's an important distinction. One beer isn't magically making you fat. But that's not how most of us experience alcohol in the real world.
It's:
The drinks + the extra calories + the crappy food + the bad sleep + the missed workout.
That's what I noticed this summer.
If your goal is getting lean or staying lean, cutting alcohol removes one of the easiest sources of unnecessary calories — and one of the behaviors that can lead to eating even more of them.
4. Alcohol Can Hurt Muscle Recovery After Training
This one should get the attention of anyone who takes lifting seriously. Training doesn't actually build muscle. Training provides the stimulus.
Recovery is when your body adapts to that stimulus.
Researchers have specifically examined what happens when alcohol is consumed following strenuous exercise. In one controlled study involving physically active men, researchers had subjects perform resistance training, continuous cycling, and high-intensity intervals.
Afterward, subjects consumed either protein or a large amount of alcohol combined with either protein or carbohydrates.
Compared with protein alone, alcohol plus protein reduced post-exercise muscle protein synthesis by approximately 24%.
When alcohol was consumed with carbohydrates instead of protein, muscle protein synthesis was approximately 37% lower than with protein alone.
Important context: this study used a very large alcohol dose — approximately 12 standard drinks — so those percentages should not be interpreted as what happens after one beer.
But the overall lesson isn't difficult to understand.
Getting hammered after training isn't helping your recovery.
Think about how much effort we put into maximizing muscle growth. I lifted consistently all summer and did not notice any significant changes in strength of muscle size. This is probably attributable to my constant influx of alcohol over the last 3 months.
5. Drinking Less May Help You Age Better
My goals have changed as I've gotten older. I'm not just training to look better at the beach next month or good in a tee shirt. I want to be strong 20 years from now.
I want to be the older guy who still trains hard, moves well and looks like he could help you move to a new house. Heavy alcohol consumption doesn't fit particularly well into that plan. It can destroy bone health, increase blood pressure, increase the risk of heart issues, and more.
One systematic review and meta-analysis examined 36 trials involving 2,865 participants and found that reducing alcohol intake lowered blood pressure among people consuming more than two drinks per day.
The greatest reductions occurred among heavier drinkers who substantially reduced their alcohol consumption.
That's significant because blood pressure is one of those health markers you can't see in the mirror. You can look muscular and lean and still have things going wrong underneath the hood.
What Happens When You Quit Drinking Alcohol?
The exact effects will depend on how much and how frequently you currently drink.
But removing alcohol eliminates a source of liquid calories and removes alcohol's direct effects on sleep and recovery.
For someone who has been drinking regularly, that could potentially translate into:

But there's another benefit that's harder to measure.
Consistency over a long period of time is key.
The Part About Alcohol Nobody Wants to Admit
Here's what I've realized after drinking more than I should have this summer:
Alcohol takes more from me than it gives me. The first drink feels good. Maybe the second one does too.
Then you start to feel the impact. Don't even bring up the money that is wasted because the combined cost is too crazy and depressing to think about. I personally could probably put one kid through college on the money I've wasted on alcohol over the years.
Frequently Asked Questions About Quitting Alcohol
Does quitting alcohol help you lose weight?
It can. Alcohol contains approximately 7 calories per gram, so eliminating alcoholic drinks can significantly reduce calorie intake for regular drinkers. Drinking can also be accompanied by additional food consumption, making total calorie intake even higher. Weight loss still ultimately depends on overall energy balance.
Does alcohol lower testosterone in men?
The effect depends on dose and drinking pattern. Acute low doses don't necessarily reduce testosterone and can temporarily increase it. However, research indicates that chronic alcohol consumption in healthy men is associated with lower total and free testosterone. Heavy alcohol intake appears particularly problematic for male hormone health.
Does quitting alcohol improve sleep?
Alcohol can make you feel sleepy initially, but research shows that it can disrupt normal sleep architecture and reduce REM sleep. A recent systematic review found REM disruption even at relatively low doses, with larger doses causing greater disruption.
Does alcohol hurt muscle growth?
Large amounts of alcohol consumed after exercise have been shown to reduce post-exercise muscle protein synthesis, even when protein is consumed. The research showing large reductions used a very high alcohol dose, so it shouldn't be assumed that a single drink produces the same effect.
How long should I quit drinking to notice a difference?
There isn't one universal timeline. A 30-day alcohol-free period is a practical personal experiment because it's long enough to observe changes in sleep, energy, calorie intake, training consistency and how you feel without alcohol in your normal routine.
